The Pantomime

A magical photograph that perhaps would have made the cover of “LIFE” magazine once-upon-a-time, this extraordinary capture by Hruby comes from a lifetime of specializing in candid photography in countries around the world. A tenth-of-a-second freezes a pantomime while glancing right at the camera, in mid-movement of his performance, as a family and tourists watch from nearby. The photograph was taken on rue du Pas-Saint-Georges and rue du Cancera in Bordeaux, France. Hruby explained in the taking of this picture; “I walked every day for years throughout the streets of my Bordeaux, taking pictures. This particular performer, a pantomime, I had never seen before this day. It wasn’t till later, upon examining the photos I had taken, that I realized in this particular shot, though in mid-movement, he was looking exactly at me at precisely the tenth-of-a-second that I snapped the shot. I never knew that he looked at me at all. I never saw this performer ever again in Bordeaux after this one afternoon.”
