Street Of Dreams
You are looking at a street that has existed since the middle-ages in Xi’an, China. To the left are the ancient city walls built during the 14th century in the Ming Dynasty. Far off in the distance of the wall is the Great South Gate, one of the few entrances into the ancient and fortified city. It was through this gate that medieval soldiers would ride through on horseback, often returning from patrols, expeditions, and battles. Once through the gate, they rode in columns down this very street. Their stables were located not far from behind where the camera is positioned for this shot. Hruby was taken back by this unique street; the ancient wall on one side and various restaurants, coffee houses and pubs on the other. What struck him in a city of millions of people was how deserted and silent this street was during normal dinner hours. It was in this moment that he tried to visualize and imagine the sounds of the soldiers still returning from their missions and riding down this very road still. As if their ghosts were still riding down this street returning to their stables. Now called South Shuncheng Road, Hruby felt compelled to name this creation: Street of Dreams.
