Protestant Cemetery (B&W)
Often empty except for those interred there, Hruby takes a beautiful Black and White Photograph of the main and only trail leading through this 18th century cemetery founded by the earliest European settlers then on the island. The trail marks where the original wall was erected to the cemetery with the oldest known graves to the right of the trail. The wall was later taken down and moved further to the left in order to expand the cemetery in the 19th century. There are numerous prominent Europeans buried here but a less notable one but caught the interest of Hruby. It was the 1859 grave of Thomas Leonowens, husband of Anna Leonowens who became the inspiration for the Broadway play and later the movie, “Anna and the King.” Having grown up as a child, Hruby remembered sitting down with his family and watching “The King and I” on Black and White television in the 1960’s. He could have never have imagined that his eventual travels would have him touch in real life, part of that amazing story in Penang, Malaysia. This amazing photograph places you right in the very middle of this quiet, almost unknown cemetery in Penang.
