Outside is the World
Standing alone in this small courtyard, one looks out through the portal to see the modern world of Georgetown on Penang Island in Malaysia. This, from within the very sacred temple of Kek Lok Si, built in 1891. Considered one of the largest and finest Buddhist temple complexes in Southeast Asia. Hruby attempts to capture the surrealism of the tranquility, peacefulness, intellectualism, and spirituality from within the temple while looking out into the real world that is far from tranquil and peaceful; often brutal, non-forgiving, naïve, and a realm of many religions and cults that at times have brought death and violence. Thus, the portal where a person can pass through from one world into the other.
