Ghosts of Jerejak Island
Hruby took some artistic liberties with his ‘Ghosts of Jerejak Island’ photograph to have it mirror the darkness that surrounds this island. It sits just off of the coast of Georgetown, on Penang Island in Malaysia. It was originally inhabited by a leper colony in the 1860’s. By the end of the 19th century, the island then also became a major Customs Health Quarantine Centre for immigrants and pilgrims arriving to Penang. This included a major Tuberculosis outbreak just after WWII. Once occupied by the Japanese military during WWII; by the 1960’s, it housed a new Penal Colony for the most dangerous of criminals throughout Malaysia to be remanded there. It earned the name “Alcatraz.” Over 9,000 people are believed to have died on the island. Only approximately 200 graves are known, some over a hundred years old. Some say the island is a very haunted place with many ghosts still lurking there.
