Entrance to Calligraphy Street
Again, Hruby attempts to fuse poetry and history with photography as he shoots the entrance to Calligraphy Street under an array of color and light at night. This extraordinary street was already thriving in the early 5th century. Originally named ‘Shu Yuan Men’ street; to the left can be seen the Baoqing Tower. It is all that remains of a Chinese Temple that was built there between 601-604 AD. To the right can be seen the restored medieval gate, built during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and entrance to the prestigious Guanzhong Academy located down this street. Established in 1609, it was from this academy that the street became famous for its calligraphy and other fine arts. The academy still exists today.
